Barb Dendy Becomes South Carolina's First CCHW III

SCCHWA is proud to announce that South Carolina has their first CCHW III!

Barb Dendy has achieved CCHW III.

Below is a message from Barb about her journey as a Community Health Worker.

Greetings,

I would dare to say my natural DNA is that of a helper. I remember even as a child that I would
playhouse and pretend to cook meals for others. As time evolved, I found myself being the one
who would cook for our family of twelve. As a young girl I was always concerned about the other
person and sought to do what the scriptures say, “Be kindly affectionate to one another with
brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another”, Romans 12:10. Just so happens that
I was not aware that what I was doing had a name attached to it. It all came so naturally. Today
I’m still that girl with the need to serve and help others which is the heart of a Community Health
Worker. Compassion is big on the list and just being there to assist others in navigating life and
some tough barriers, to bring awareness and help people find their voice is incomparable. You
see that was Me, alone and afraid but there was one person who was a voice in my life. I have
lived experience like those of whom I serve. You know we often don’t take the time to look back
on the journey but applying for the tier III CHW was humbling. I am so honored and proud to be
the first awarded Tier III Community Health Worker III for the state of SC and I look forward to
continuing to serve the community.
Thank you to those of you who have supported and encouraged me along the journey!
“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

Blessings,

Barb Dendy
