Community Health Workers play a crucial role in promoting wellness, preventing diseases, and ensuring healthcare access to underprivileged and underserved communities. Becoming a Certified CHW
To become a Certified Community Health Worker (CCHW) in South Carolina, you must complete a state-approved Core Competency training program, pass a certification exam, and meet any additional requirements established by the South Carolina Community Health Worker Credentialing Council (SCCHWCC). Our goal is to support your growth and development as you serve your communities to improve public health.
Core Competency Training consists of 80 hours of facilitated, engaged learning and 80 hours of practicum supervised by an approved preceptor.
The following organizations provide state-approved Community Health Worker (CHW) training programs, ensuring that you receive comprehensive and up-to-date training to serve your communities effectively.

Recertification
South Carolina Certified Community Health Workers certified need to accrue 24 continuing education units every 2 years as a Recertification requirement; 12 of those hours must be CHW CEUs. Up to 2 CEUs per year may come for activities CHWs to support other Community Health Workers, organizations and SCCHWA.
South Carolina Certified Community Health Workers certified before January 1, 2023, need to be recertified by December 31, 2024.
All others must apply for recertification by the expiration date of their certification, two years from the date of their Core Competency Certification.
